Earlier today EW released the first official stills from the set of ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and now we have our first good look at the young mutants who will be at the center of the action alongside Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Quicksiler (Evan Peters) and Mystique/Raven (Jennifer Lawrence).

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ has a lot riding on its shoulders as it is the last of the trilogy of the current ‘First Class’ X-Men run and is said to also be the film that will open the franchise towards a new path. The film is set 10 years after ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ which retconned the events that occurred in ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ much to the relief of fans. The big bad this time around is the titular Apocalypse (Oscar Issac) who is believed to be the first mutant. As he emerges from his Egyptian tomb, he’s not happy with the state of the world and decides the planet would be better off if he were in charge (after all, what supervillain doesn’t dream of world domination). He goes and recruits other mutants [Mageneto, Psylocke (Olivia Munn). Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Angel (Ben Hardy)] to become his Four Horseman to aid him in this task.  On the other end, Charles (who has been training other mutants since we last saw him) must find others with special abilities to fight this oncoming threat to humanity.

While we’ve grown to adore the original mutants from Singer’s ‘X-Men’ film, but because ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘ occurs in the 80s, we’ll be seeing a younger set of the same people. So here are your “new” mutants with a brief description courtesy of EW:

Jean Grey (Sophie Turner)
Scared of her telepathic power, she’s one of Charles Xavier’s most prized students.

Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee)
The German teleport is rescued by Raven and becomes a source of comic relief.

Cyclops (Tye Sheridan)
This bad boy finds romance with Jean Grey, one of the new movie’s three love stories.

Jubliee (Lana Condor)
A fashionable student at Charles’ school, she’s able to unleash colorful energy bursts.

Storm (Alexandra Shipp)
The weather-controlling teen isn’t in control when Apocalypse discovers her.

While the images are just head shots, it does seem the make up and costume departments did a great job in making the cast look similar to their comic counterparts. Hopefully we’ll get to see more of the whole ensemble as filming continues.

So what do you think of the “new” young mutants?

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ is currently in production and is slated to open on May 27, 2016.
