After the surprising success of last year’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ it’s no surprise that a sequel was factored into Marvel Studios’ Phase Three. However, True Believers wanting more of the sometimes-dysfunctional intergalactic team won’t have to wait until 2017 to get it.

At least year’s New York Comic Con, Marvel Animation announced that they would be heading to Disney XD to star in their very own animated series featuring the likes of Will Friedle as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Trevor Devall as Rocket Raccoon, Vanessa Marshall as Gamora, David Sobolov as Drax the Destroyer, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot. Now, we know when the new show will finally land on a screen near you.

According to IGN, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ will officially debut in September, but that will be after a big rollout that the network is planning for the new show starting in August. Every Saturday throughout the month, Disney XD will air two character shorts to introduce the team. Then, they’ll show a sneak peek at the first episode on September 5th before presenting the full one-hour premiere on September 26th. But before all of that, we have some new key art with the official synopsis of the series:

“Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” features themes of redemption and the importance of friendships and family told through a series of riveting sequential story arcs. The series follows the newly-formed team who finds a strange artifact keyed only to the DNA of Peter Quill. Upon opening it, Quill unleashes a treasure map leading to a powerful weapon known as the Cosmic Seed, which is capable of giving birth to the next universe. It’s up to the Guardians to find, protect and ultimately destroy the Cosmic Seed in order to keep it out of the hands of those who would abuse its power, from galactic big boss Thanos, to the conniving brothers the Collector and the Grandmaster, to a resurrected Ronan, to the ultimate trickster, Loki, in order to save the universe.

Even though it doesn’t tie in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are you excited to see the upcoming ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ animated series? Let us know in the comments below.
