Before the last season of ‘American Horror Story’ even aired, star Jessica Lange horrified fans when she announced that the fourth incarnation, ‘Freak Show,’ would be her last. Not only that, but the Hollywood legend casually stated that she would be leaving the acting field for good!
And indeed, this year’s ‘Hotel’ is moving ahead with a different focal actress, pop star Lady Gaga. But all hope that Lange might return in some capacity isn’t lost. She admits she would “absolutely” welcome the chance to play “a small character for a couple of episodes… This was a great collaboration, so I would love to keep working with [producer Ryan Murphy].”
Murphy is on the same page, saying, “It always starts with a character for Jessica, so I think I’d have to present her with something she was very interested in. I really want her to keep her hand in. Does that mean 13 episodes? Does that mean six? Does that mean one?”
But some are pouncing on other statements Lange made regarding her successor. “I have no idea if she’s an actor or not,” the grande dame said of Gaga, (born Stefani Germanotta) who is more known for her outrageous music videos, theatrical live shows and even more so her controversial red carpet antics.
Certain folks are definitely reading some shade into Lange’s remark.
Her additional comments didn’t exactly squelch that interpretation.
“She’ll be surrounded by all those great actors. The same ones I had the great opportunity to work with… But I’m sure it will all work out. I don’t know what the season is, what they’re doing, what the premise is, who the characters are. But all I can say is she’s going to have good writing and she’s going to have great actors to work with. It’s a good start.”
In Gaga’s defense, she did attend New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and studied acting, which she has not only displayed in some of her videos, but in theatrical movies, including Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Machete Kills’ and ‘Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.’ She is expected to return for the sequel ‘Machete Kills In Space.’
Did Lange even mean to dis Gaga with her words? Or are people reading too much into things, to create a phony catfight where there is none?
What do you think? Would you like to see Lange return to ‘AHS?’ Or should she let the newer cast develop on their own?
