It seems like just yesterday that Marvel mentioned Ant-Man might be joining The Avengers and now he is officially confirmed to be appearing in ‘Captain America: Civil War.’ I suspect we’ll be seeing Paul Rudd’s take on the character signing up to be one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes sooner than later at this point. Of course, if he is to choose sides, will he be following Captain America or Iron Man into battle? Conjecture aside, let us take a look at the official release on who will be in the film.

While the list itself is pretty long, we already know that the following characters would be showing up:

  • Chris Evans as Captain America
  • Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man
  • Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther
  • Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow
  • Sebastian Stan as The Winter Soldier
  • Anthony Mackie as Hawkeye
  • Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch
  • Frank Grillo as Crossbones
  • Daniel Bruhl as Baron Zemo
  • Martin Freeman as a mystery character

No real surprises there as these are names of those who have already previously been cast in the unofficial next Avengers film.

Aside from Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man we also have three other surprise names that made the list!

  • Paul Bettany will reprise his role as The Vision
  • Don Cheadle shows up as War Machine
  • Emily VanCamp as Agent 13 (aka Sharon Carter)
  • William Hurt makes an appearance as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross

With the General involved, that could even potentially pave the way for a Red Hulk appearance down the line. I wonder if he’ll be involved with the initiative just from his prior experience with super powered individuals or specifically because of his character’s history with The Hulk. What is interesting here is that Marvel has been kind of avoiding that ‘The Incredible Hulk’ has been around even though it is considered to be part of continuity. Sure they have had to recast Edward Norton, but it’s good to see that William Hurt is returning to reprise his role. While I doubt they’ll really be pushing for his eventual transformation into the Red Hulk, I could see him siding with the military on an initiative that forces heroes to work with the government in some capacity.

What is more interesting, though, is that a previous rumor specifically mentioning Hurt’s character tying ‘Ant-Man’ to ‘Captain America: Civil War’ seems to now be confirmed which would also confirm some plot points for ‘Civil War.’

There is no official word if Spider-Man will make an appearance in this film, but chances are that he’ll pop up even if it is just in an end-scene cameo.

We also have a new official synopsis of the film below to share with you! I think we can all safely assume that Bruhl’s Baron Zemo will be the “nefarious villain” is who they will be at odds with in the film:

Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

What are your thoughts on the return of The Vision, War Machine, and General Ross? Do you think the film is making headway for a great unofficial entree into The Avengers films or is there just too many major players in it to get you excited about it as a Captain America movie?
