Since ‘Sherlock’ and ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ star Benedict Cumberbatch was cast as the lead in Scott Derrickson’s ‘Doctor Strange,’ things have been pretty quiet on that front. Every time someone asks about the Master of the Mystic Arts, those involved stay pretty mum on the topic and basically say to wait and see. However, a new rumor says that you won’t have to wait as long as you thought to see Dr. Stephen Strange onscreen.
Previously, we learned that ‘Doctor Strange’ would star in his own Phase Three film scheduled for 2016. But according to sources at Bleeding Cool, Cumberbatch will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as the Sorcerer Supreme on one of Netflix’s upcoming series before coming to a theater near you.
The popular streaming service’s corner of the MCU is the place to be right now. After the success of ‘Daredevil,’ which has just been renewed for a second season, True Believers anxiously await the arrival of ‘A.K.A. Jessica Jones’ starring Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, and David Tennant. But after that wraps up, the powers that be will start working on shows focusing on Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
So which one will the good doctor pop up in for a house call? The rumor states that he’ll be appearing alongside Danny Rand in ‘Iron Fist.’ Considering the mystical aspects of that character’s mythology, it would make the most sense for Strange to appear in that show. There’s currently no word how and why he’ll be there, but Cumberbatch is expected to be involved somehow. While it remains to be seen whether or not the in-demand actor will physically be there to play the part, it is said that he will “at least do the voice.”
Since everything in the MCU is connected, it’s not completely far-fetched that this could happen, although it would mark the first time that a major character from the movies interacts with the television division of the company. An argument can be made that Samuel L. Jackson has appeared on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ but I’m talking about superheroes. Many big names like Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, and Tom Hiddleston have said that they have interest in guest starring on a Marvel series, but we haven’t seen that happen yet. If this rumor does happen to be true, then Doctor Strange will be treading new and exciting territory for Marvel Studios. Plus, it definitely would be cool to see him interact with a member of the MCU’s version of the Defenders since he’s a prominent member of that team in the comics.
As I’ve been saying throughout the article, this is totally a rumor right now, but if it turns out to be true, does it make you more excited to see ‘Iron Fist’? What business do you think Doctor Strange would have with Danny Rand? And does anybody else think that Madame Gao from ‘Daredevil’ will have something to do with the heroes teaming up?
