When Ryan Gosling started to assemble the cast of his directorial debut ‘How To Catch A Monster’ back in 2013, it seemed like he was selecting the stars of the most popular sci-fi franchises in history. First, he landed former ‘Doctor Who’ star Matt Smith fresh from his departure from the TARDIS. Saoirse Ronan of ‘The Host’ and possibly ‘Star Wars’ also joined the cast along with Iain De Caestecker of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ Ben Mendelsohn of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ (and potentially a ‘Star Wars’ spinoff), and Christina Hendricks, who appeared on ‘Firefly’ becoming known for her role in ‘Mad Men.’ After the film’s name was changed to ‘Lost River.‘ it played at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and this year’s South By Southwest.

Now, the fantasy neo-noir from the heartthrob star of ‘Drive’ and ‘Blue Valentine’ is ready for it’s U.S. release, which includes a limited theatrical run in New York and Los Angeles followed by a same day digital release nationwide. To prepare for the debut of the film, a new featurette was released online to give the audiences a little preview of what they’ll be seeing from the dark fairy tale written and directed by Gosling. You can check it out below followed by the official synopsis:

Set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city, Billy, a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son, Bones, discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive.

What this feels like to me is an extended NSFW red band trailer, but I guess Warner Bros. can call this whatever they want, right? Either way, it definitely shows off the distinctive style and aesthetic that Gosling is going for in his first film behind the camera.
