Exciting news for X-Philes! Yesterday we reported that there were mumblings in the air of FOX working on an ‘X-Files’ revival and now we have official confirmation that it’s happening!

That’s right! The truth is now out there! It’s been 13 years since the ‘X-Files’ graced the small screen and according to the press release from Fox and executive producer Chris Carter, the show will be returning for a six episode event series with Carter at the helmer’s chair. Besides being the creator, executive producer and writer for the show, Carter also directed 10 episodes during the show’s 9 year television run. (Yes, he did direct the often derided ‘X-Files’ film ‘I Want to Believe’ which many don’t want to believe they spent money to see it, but we’ll file that away for now.) Also returning to investigate the unexplained are David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson who will be reprising their roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully respectively.

According to Carter, now is the perfect time to bring back the series:

“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

Network execs Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group, are also pleased with the return adding:

“We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of THE X-FILES – one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers – and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again.  THE X-FILES was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as THE X-FILES, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”

The news has been a long time coming with many speculations and rumors coming up in the last few years so it’s nice to finally have something official. No word as to whether any other familiar faces will be returning or other details about the six episodes, but with filming to begin this summer, news will be more forthcoming as the production start date gets closer.
