A few weeks back Nintendo announced that they were ready to “redefine entertainment” and expand their business practices. Now Nintendo is showing us what they mean. The gaming company is entering into a business and capital alliance with Japanese mobile gaming giant DeNA to make smartphone games based on Nintendo’s IPs.

In their press release, Nintendo explains that the “alliance is intended to complement Nintendo’s dedicated video game systems business and extend Nintendo’s reach into the vast market of smart device users worldwide.”

These games will not be straight up ports of old Nintendo games: “To ensure the quality of game experience that consumers expect from this alliance of Nintendo and DeNA, only new original games optimized for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system,” Nintendo stated.

While we can expect some of these mobile games to be based on Nintendo’s most popular IPs, including ‘Super Mario Bros’ and ‘Legend of Zelda,’ Nintendo says that all of their IPs are eligible for development and will be up consideration.

As part of their expansion into mobile gaming and as a way to connect it to their console games, Nintendo says DeNA will be helping them to make an online membership service that users can connect through via smart devices, PC, and Nintendo systems (including the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U). This service is set to launch in fall of 2015.

Neither Nintendo nor DeNA has given any specifics as to what kind of games they will be releasing nor what IPs they are based on, but they say that more information on this is “forthcoming.”

This alliance is not purely a business one – Nintendo and DeNA have cemented their alliance into a capital one as well, with Nintendo now owning 10% of DeNA’s stock, and in turn DeNA owning 1.24% of Nintendo’s, each totally to about 22 billion yen.

That’s not all that Nintendo has in store for the future: in part to show that they are still dedicated to console gaming, Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata has also announced that they are working on a new console under the codename NX. They plan on designing the console off of a “brand-new concept,” however that is all the specifics that Nintendo has released at this time, and NX won’t be coming out any time soon. Iwata says that he hopes to release more information about NX next year.
