Alan Tudyk launched a fundraising effort on Indiegogo to fund a new web series starring himself and fellow ‘Firefly’ alum Nathan Fillion, playing former cast members of a quickly cancelled science fiction series that has a ravenous cult following.  Ahem.  Tudyk is also the writer and director of the series.

Tudyk plays Wray Nerely, the “actor” who played the pilot of the spaceship on a show called ‘Spectrum’.  Fillion plays Jack Moore, the ship’s captain, who has since gone on to greater fame on a show called ‘Return To Tomorrow.’  (Intentionally or not, that was the title of an episode of the original ‘Star Trek.’)  Tudyk’s character, meanwhile is reduced to making a living by attending cons– making him a ‘Con Man,’ get it?

Look forward to appearances by other sci fi (including ‘Firefly’) alums James Gunn, Seth Green, Felicia Day, Sean Maher, Gina Torres and Amy Acker.

The first clip shows Ray on his way to a con, in an airport bathroom being accosted by a fan and the results are awkwardly hilarious.  Tudyk’s strong suit has always been comedy and he gets to showcase that here.

He states:

“It’s about the convention world.  My character, Wray Nerely, was on a science fiction show called Spectrum, that was canceled too soon, and now he goes to conventions, to sign head shots, and meet fans, and do panels. Nathan’s character, Jack Moore, who was the captain of the spaceship on Spectrum, has gone on to incredible action-hero stardom, like Matt Damon. My character is frustrated with his situation and frustrated by Jack’s stardom. We follow Wray’s story as he goes to the conventions and does video game voice overs and we are going to populate it with sci-fi actors and people that you will find at conventions. Zany hi-jinks ensue!”
