Mel Brooks wants to start filming ‘Spaceballs 2‘ in 2016. There isn’t a lot of comedy in science fiction that I feel has held up over the years but this is something I am truly excited for! It isn’t often that I have a geek out moment but Brooks is one of the few comedic geniuses who I feel has never lost it with age. With ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ coming out, it seems that he wants to revisit his spoof filled universe once again.

The world has gone 20 years without Brooks releasing a film. Generations of audiences may have missed the humor from one of the funniest minds alive and now all of that is going to change! Recently Brooks was on Adam Carolla’s ‘Take a Knee’ podcast and he was asked what his next project might be:

“Maybe I could do another musical, maybe I could do another movie. I was thinking about Spaceballs the other day. In Spaceballs, in the movie, Bill Pullman says to me, Yogurt, just plain Yogurt, he says “Do you think we’ll ever meet again?” and I say “Well, I don’t know…maybe in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.” And I’m thinking now, if I did a movie that came out right after Star Wars comes out — maybe a couple of months later — I’d have a big weekend, you know? No matter what, even if it fell on its ass and didn’t get its money back…but that first weekend, the anticipation of seeing Spaceballs 2, would…I still have Daphne Zuniga and I still have Rick Moranis if he’d do it, and I’ve still got me.”

While Brooks could have been pulling all of this out of nowhere, in a 2014 interview with Parade Magazine it sounded as if a script had already been in the works. Sounds great? Who doesn’t want more of Dark Helmet?

Well, the problem with all of this is the script appears to have Rick Moranis as a lead. Not only that, but Mr. Brooks mentioned him above as well. Moranis has long been retired from acting. In fact when asked about any interest in ‘Ghostbusters 3’ long before the change of cast he said that:

“I’m comfortable with where I live. There’s certain places I’m not interested in being. I’m not interested in doing anything I’ve done in the past … I have no idea. It’s not something I’ve given any thought to at all.”

While that view may have changed since it was said in 2013, the option to once again work with Mel Brooks could bring him back, I wouldn’t get my hopes up. We already won’t be seeing a return from John Candy and John Rivers as both have passed and without Moranis this may not end up on the big screen.

Only time will tell. Personally, just the though of Mel Brooks making another movie has me more excited and the fact that it could be a follow up to ‘Spaceballs’? Well, I’ll admit that I’m geeking out a little.

I once again have hope that the following quote won’t hold true.

Would you love to see ‘Spaceballs’ hit the big screen for a second run? Do you care that it’s another sequel being made so many years after the original? Share your thoughts below!
