Rumors have been circulating about standalone ‘Star Wars’ spinoffs since 2012, but we finally started hearing some official details about them last year. We know for sure that Josh Trank of ‘Chronicle’ and the upcoming ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot will helm one, but it’s sounding like the first one will be under the direction of ‘Godzilla’ filmmaker Gareth Edwards. Recently, writer Gary Whitta shared that he had wrapped up a year of work on the first draft of this film for Edwards, which is rumored to involve an intergalactic heist to retrieve the plans for the original Death Star. With crime such as this afoot, there’s no doubt that we’ll see some shady characters from all over a galaxy far, far away including smugglers and bounty hunters. However, the latest word coming out of the rumor mill says that two very iconic characters that fall under those categories will appear in this movie together.

When the talks of a ‘Star Wars’ spinoff first emerged, many said that Han Solo, Boba Fett, and Yoda were the leading candidates to be featured in their own movies outside of the new adventure that J.J. Abrams is currently crafting. Though nothing has officially confirmed that any one of them will be starring in Edwards’ film (potentially alongside a female lead played by Rooney Mara, Kate Mara, Tatiana Maslany, or Felicity Jones), the latest word is that notorious bounty hunter Fett and the captain of the Millennium Falcon Solo might actually be sharing the screen in Edwards’ movie.

This news comes courtesy of Latino Review, which also has a ton of other scoops on the production of this film. After revealing that Disney and Lucasfilm are looking to utilize some cost-saving measures by redressing some sets from ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ before heading off to Mexico to shoot on location, the article speculates that the film will take place on Geonosis since the supposed storyline suggests that the bounty hunters are after the Death star plans, which were last seen onscreen there in ‘Attack of the Clones’. We’re also reminded that Geonosis is the final resting place of Jango Fett, so that note brings up the fact that Boba Fett is meant to star in his own spinoff. It’s then that they reveal that their sources tell them that a young Han Solo would be included in the film as well, presumably showing the advent of his relationship with Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt.

All of this actually makes a great deal of sense considering Han’s background. Before joining the Rebels, he was a smuggler and someone like that could come in handy during a heist. And since he doesn’t recognize the Death Star in ‘A New Hope,’ maybe they don’t succeed and that’s the beginning of his troubled history with Fett. With all this potential interconnectivity and legendary sci-fi characters, this ‘Star Wars’ spinoff set for December 2016 is certainly shaping up to be something to keep an eye on.

What do you think about Boba Fett and Han Solo potentially appearing in the same ‘Star Wars’ spinoff? Are there any aspects of their history that you hope get explored if they do show up in Gareth Edwards’ upcoming film? And how much stock do you hold in this theory of Mexico doubling as Geonosis?
