Not that this is much of a surprise considering the rumors that have been circulating since Disney acquired Lucasfilm back in 2012, but it is some official words about the ‘Star Wars’ spinoffs. Previously, we heard that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg were locked to pen these films instead of sequels to J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’. Then, we learned that the spinoffs would be origin stories, potentially for Boba Fett, Yoda, or Han Solo. Now, if those characters are in fact the subjects of these standalone movies, then that “or” turns into an “and”.

Variety reporter Marc Graser shared earlier this week that CEO Bob Iger revealed that there are indeed “at least three” spinoffs in the works right now in addition to Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. The executive announced this during the Walt Disney Company quarterly earning stockholders call after stating that plans are being made for the franchise to expand over the next decade. Presumably, we’d be seeing these spinoffs in between each proper episode, so the first one is likely to drop in 2016, followed by ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ in 2017 and so on.

Now that we officially know how many spinoffs are in the pipeline, the only thing left is to know who they will be about. There has been extensive talk about the various possibilities of a young Han Solo movie where we’d get to se the Kessel Run or a Boba Fett movie showing some other bounties that he’s chased in his career. Also, with the third film confirmed, one has to wonder who will be writing it. Many writers and filmmakers have met on various ‘Star Wars’ projects since Disney got the ball rolling once again, so the possibilities are endless at this point.

What do you think about the announcement of three ‘Star Wars’ spinoff films? Besides Han Solo, Boba Fett, and Yoda, who would you like to see get their own movie? And who do you think will write the third spinoff? Speculate away in the comment section.
