When Idris Elba (‘Thor: The Dark World’,’Pacific Rim‘) isn’t busy acting he runs a production studio called Greed Door Production Co. that has just announced an upcoming trilogy based on the novel ‘Poe Must Die’ by Marc Olden.

So how are we going to see a new version of Poe play out on the big screen here? Well instead of just a writer we’re going to be seeing him as someone who fights demons, is an alcoholic, and attempting to deal with the death of his wife.

I suppose some of that probably isn’t too far off base if you go off of his written work, his tendencies to enjoy large quantities of liquor which is something that did vastly increase with the death of his wife, Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe. On his mission, Poe is joined by a man named Pierce James Figg that is hunting a sorcerer that is named Jonathan who is trying to become immortal and lord of the demons.

Wait, what?

Here’s the official synopsis of the novel which may help clarify things a little.

Against a backdrop of New York City in the 1840s, a hellhole of crime and squalor, Edgar Allan Poe plays out a deadly game, fighting not only the demonic forces waged against him, but also his personal demons, the memory of his beloved wife and the alcohol he consumes in order to forget her.

While Elba is pretty booked up at the moment, it sounds like a set of films that could be amazing to see him in. Hollywood seems to push out a movie every few years that has a historic persona mixed with the supernatural and there are more hits here than misses in these so I’m curious to see how active Elba will be involved in the project and who else might be joining the cast.

Do you think ‘Poe Must Die’ has some great big screen potential? Who would you love to see in the trilogy? Share your thoughts below!
