With the success of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ I’m sure it is no surprise that Marvel is pushing cosmic in a big way and Brian Bendis and Sam Humphries have just had a chance to sit down and talk about their upcoming ‘Black Vortex’ saga! The series will start on February 4th and will give us a crossover event that combines the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ ‘All-New X-Men,’ ‘Legendary Star-Lord,’ ‘Nova,’ and ‘Captain Marvel’ books with a ton of other characters thrown in for good measure! With ‘Infinity’ being a bit of a downer of an event on quality, here’s hoping the two have mapped out a return to grand cosmic adventures!
Here’s a little of what we can expect on who is in charge of the series! I should, of course, warn you know there are a few potentially huge spoilers below.
Humphries and Bendis are actually writing the bulk of the story across the various issues and they had a lot to keep in mind with around 25 main characters that will be jam packed into the event! Much like the recent ‘AXIS’ crossover, we’ll be seeing a new chapter ship each week once this starts. The plus side is a shorter scale yet epicly large event, hopefully the minus side won’t be the quality lost that ‘AXIS’ suffered from.
While they are writing the bulk of the series, they are more like showrunners. We’re going to be seeing some of the writers being able to show off their individual characters. Kelly-Sue gets to have a huge Captain Marvel moment in her chapter and Bendis, of course, gets a couple of huge X-Men moments.
For the exact breakdown we’ll be seeing Humphries writing the first and last chapters, ‘Black Vortex Alpha’ and ‘Black Vortex Omega’ with the art being done by Ed McGuinness. Humphries was actually so impressed with Mc:Ginness’ designs that some of the series was re-written to show off more of the new character stylings.
Bessides McGuinness, Andrea Sorentino, Paco Medina, Mike Mayhew, Valerio Schitti, and Mahmud Asrar are the main artists attached to the crossover however I’m sure there are more as well.
The series itself will begin with Star-Lord dealing with his father and Kitty coming into space in order to help him which we had seen happen in the closure of the last issue of ‘Legendary Star-Lord.’ Peter’s father is actually the cause of this mess having actually been the man responsible for unearthing the Black Vortex and drawing Thane into things. When Kitty gets involved and in trouble that is how we see the ‘All-New X-Men’ show up on the scene.
For Peter and Kitty? Well, “Somethings happen in this story that will really challenge Peter and Kitty’s relationship, and take people aback if they think they know where that story is going.”
The main point though is many of our heroes are going to be getting some drastically new levels of power due to the Black Vortex. Accordint to Humpriess, “… we’ve seen in the Marvel Universe what happens when someone gets too much power too fast, and here some of the heroes are going to face some very tough questions.”
Clearly some of the shots and descriptions below, Drax in particular, shows that not everything is going to be okay when this all comes to a close.
As I mentioned, one of the big things will be cosmically enhanced characters that we’ve known for awhile. First up is a Cosmically Enhanced Gamora Design by Ed McGuinness
Cosmically Enhanced Beast Design by Ed McGuinness
Cosmically Enhanced Nova Design by Ed McGuinness
Cosmically Enhanced Drax Design by Ed McGuinness
Cosmically Enhanced Ronan Design by Ed McGuinness
Where will we be when the series ends? According to Bendis, “Not everything will be put back at the end–not all the characters are going back to their books, not all characters are going to make it out of this.”
In fact, one of the more interesting changes isn’t going to be a level of strength. “The Beast is a character that’s struggling with being the smartest man in the room but being surrounded by all these physics-breaking characters. Hank is given a level of cosmic knowledge that he’d give up his whole life for, an understanding of how the universe works and what his role in it is. He’ll be greatly altered as a result of this story.”
Of course the All-New X-Men in particular have already seen what happens to their older selves when it comes to having a lot of power. “Jean Grey, for instance, definitely knows what happens to her, and has a better understanding of how to handle the power as a result.” However, not everyone is going to change as some of them will just be powered up versions of themselves.
