We haven’t heard much of MTV’s ‘Game of Thrones’ competitor ‘Shannara‘ quite yet but it seems that the fantasy series has just picked up Ivannna Baquero (‘Pan’s Labyrinth’,’The New Daughter’) to play Eretria on the show. The series was ordered straight to series in June and if successful, looks to be a show that can go on for quite some time. Starting in 1977 with ‘The Sword of Shannara,’ the series now includes over 25 books and Terry Brooks is regarded by many as one of the finest writers in fantasy.

In this 10-episode premiere we will see Baquero’s character Eretria, a human that is from the wrong side of the tracks, who was raised by The Rovers who are a group of thieves. Using her looks to survive, she saves another character from danger and ends up on a quest to save the Four Lands where the story takes place in.

While many of the details of how they will adapt the novels are still vague, we do know that the series is set to begin in the the second novel that were released, ‘The Elfstones of Shannara.’

Here’s a synopsis of the book:

“Ancient Evil threatens the Elves: The ancient tree created by long-lost Elven magic, is dying. When Wil Ohmsford is summoned to guard the Amberle on a perilous quest to gather a new seed for a new tree, he is faced with the Reaper, the most fearsome of all Demons. And Wil is without power to control them….”

Baquero will be joining Manu Bennett (‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’,’Arrow‘) as Allanon, Austin Butler (‘Aliens in the Attic’,’The Bling Ring’) as Wil Ohmsford, Poppy Drayton (‘Downton Abbey’,’When Calls the Heart’) as Amberle Elessedil, and Aaron Jakubenko (‘Neighbours vs. Zombies’,’Spartacus: War of the Damned’) as Ander Elessedil. I’m sure more casting will be announced in the near future.

Are you excited to see a small screen adaptation to ‘Shannara’? Do you think MTV is the right fit for the series or are we going to have a pale imitation of ‘Game of Thrones’ and not a series to look forward to? Share your thoughts below!
