Telltale Games has announced a partnership with ‘Minecraft’ creators Mojang to create a new game series based off the popular sandbox game called ‘Minecraft: Story Mode’.
“Minecraft: Story Mode will be an all-new narrative-driven game series. Set in the world of Minecraft, the series will feature an original story, driven by player choice. It will not be an add-on for Minecraft, but rather a separate stand-alone product that will premiere in 2015 on consoles, computers and mobile devices,” the developer wrote on a recent blog post. “Telltale Game’s series will mix new characters with familiar themes, in an entirely original Minecraft experience, inspired by the Minecraft community and the game that continues to inspire a generation.”
Much like Telltale Games’ previous titles like ‘The Wolf Among Us’, ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Tales from the Borderlands’, ‘Minecraft: Story Mode’ will be an episodic game series that will be released throughout the year. The series will also be similar to past Telltale Games titles with point-and-click adventure gameplay and story driven by open dialogue choices.
According to a Mojang blog post, the developer will be working alongside Telltale Games and members of the ‘Minecraft’ community to make ‘Minecraft: Story Mode’ as true to the spirit of the popular game as possible.
In terms of visuals, Mojang stated in an interactive press release that ‘Minecraft: Story Mode’ will not look exactly like ‘Minecraft but but will feel authentic in its own special way.
However, the developer asserted that the series would not act as an official story for ‘Minecraft’ in any capacity, a game that has never featured any story to go along with its open sandbox survival gameplay premise.
“We’re not intending on creating an “official” story for Steve, or explaining the world of Minecraft in detail,” Mojang said. “It will be a cool game.”
‘Minecraft: Story Mode’ is the latest in collaborative work from Telltale Games, following their previous recent collaborations with HBO for ‘Game of Thrones’ and Gearbox Software for ‘Tales from the Borderlands’.
The first episode of ‘Minecraft: Story Mode’ will release on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Windows PC, Mac, iOS and Android sometime in 2015.
