Neil Gaiman

We’ve known for awhile that Joseph Gordon-Levitt was going to be adapting Neil Gaiman‘s ‘Sandman‘ universe onto the big screen but not who would actually be playing the character. For the longest time many assumed that Gordon-Levitt might be both directing and starring, but with series creator Gaiman’s recent say on the subject it would appear that he has someone else in mind to take the role.

Actually a couple of someone’s in mind!

Who could play the strange and wonderful character of Morpheus? Well, Gaiman had a couple of interesting choices but clearly he is looking for someone that can pull off a certain type of British. Honestly I love both choices though fear contractual obligations may prevent either from being in the running.

His first thought was none other than the new ‘Doctor Strange‘ himself, Benedict Cumberbatch!

“I think the first time I saw Benedict was as Sherlock Holmes, I thought, ‘Wow, that’s incredibly Morpheus.’ And fans probably thought the same because they immediately started doing fan-art, meshing the two of them up.”

Of course with Cumberbatch playing in the Marvel Universe this is slightly unrealistic, so who else would he like to see? Well another Marvel star of course!

“Then again, Tom Hiddleston is still out there! And the truth is, as far as I’m concerned, anybody who sounds English with great cheekbones can probably pull it off.”

Now just because the two above actors are stars in the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t necessarily prevent them from starring in a Vertigo comic book. Even if Vertigo is owned by DC Entertainment. Still, it seems less likely that either would be able to take on the role and may both want a bit of a break from comic movies outside of Marvel’s demands on their time. Also with Cumberbatch’s soon to be busy schedule with Marvel and a loose assumption that we’ll be seeing more of Loki moving forward, this will leave little time for both to work on another large scale comic book adaptation, at least if they plan on getting other movies into their schedule.

In the ‘Sandman’ universe the central character is Morpheus who is the embodiment of dreams and has built up an empire around them. He becomes trapped for 70 years and his empire is destroyed which leads to him taking revenge on those who have wronged him.

What do you think of Gaiman’s choices for the character? Do you think Cumberbatch or Hiddleston would make a good Morpheus? Who would you rather see? Let us know in the comment section below!
