News is flying out about the reboot of Stephen King’s ‘The Stand‘ as it appears that Matthew McConaughey (‘Interstellar‘,’True Detective’) is in talks to star in the now four film franchise after all.
While I was originally quite against the film being at a single three hour movie, the latest announcement has it clocking in at four complete films to be true to the novel itself. I can’t wait! Director Josh Boone has said that for a four film take on the novel that it would need “a cast that’s going to blow people’s minds” and if Matthew McConaughey ends up joining the project, that will be a key piece for the film to work.
Basically what we’re hearing is that McConaughey is in talks to play the ventral villain to this story, Randall Flagg. Flagg is one of the key villains that crops of in many of King’s works and plays a vital role in ‘The Dark Tower’ series as well. While in the novels we get a limited amount of direct involvement from Flagg, he does end up playing quite a few parts as he is the closest thing to The Devil that this poor version of the Earth is likely to see. McConaughey has already proven he can win people over with a Southern charm and seems to be a perfect fit for playing the sociopathic nature of Flagg. McConaughey has long stated that he is open to epic movie franchises but only if the character he was set to portray was an interesting one. I would personally say that Stephen King’s personification of Evil made flesh really sounds like one that may have wet his appetite.
Personally, I think this would be a good fit. What do you think of McConaughey taking on the role of a slimy snake in the grass who preys on the weak and easily manipulated to get his way? Do you think he can pull it off? More importantly are you starting to get excited about a reboot of ‘The Stand’ after the last couple of years of hearing how they would try to cram it all into just a three hour film?
