Trion Worlds has announced that ‘Defiance,’ a game based on the SyFy channel show of the same name, has finally become free-to-play on the Xbox 360.

In order to install and play the game for free, players will need access to an Xbox Live Gold membership. Those who download ‘Defiance’ will get access to all of the content up through the upcoming Aftermath of the events that take place after Season 2. This includes both the entire Bay Area and Silicon Valley storylines.

Pre-existing players of the game will gain exclusive bonuses with more character slots, loadouts, ark keycode capacity and inventory slots than free-to-play users. All existing characters will also retain any extra character, inventory, loadout and ark keycode capacity they have that is beyond what will be given as a bonus to returning players.

‘Defiance’ is a massively multiplayer online third-person shooter that follows along with the events of the show. The game takes place in the San Francisco Bay Area around 15 years after the end of a war between humanity and an alliance of alien races known as the Votanis Collective. The two are forced to live together after the Votans’ terraforming efforts drastically alter Earth’s surface and changes the balance of its ecosystem. The game throws players in the shoes of one of many “Ark Hunters” enlisted by industrialist Karl Von Bach tasked with searching the Bay Area for alien technology.

‘Defiance’ was released as a full priced game on Windows PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 2, 2013 a couple weeks before the TV show’s debut. It was a game that aimed to include the action of a shooter with the large-scale campaign of an MMO game. Yet when it released, ‘Defiance’ was mostly met with mixed reception by critics. As a tie-in to the show, ‘Defiance’ was initially planned to influence the events of the show and vice versa. Unfortunately, a falling out between the two companies had prevented this from panning out.

‘Defiance’ is currently available now as free-to-play for Xbox 360, PS3 and Windows PC. The game had already gone free-to-play on Windows PC and PS3 in July and August respectively.
