‘Gotham’ is doing well on Fox, so it’s not terribly surprising that Warner Brothers is looking to deliver another prequel TV series based on its DC Comics mythology. In this case, the studio is looking to bring Superman’s home world of Krypton to the small screen. This would be the second Superman prequel, following The CW’s long-running hit ‘Smallville’ which explored the life of young Clark Kent before he donned the famous red cape.
CBS recently made a series commitment to bring ‘Supergirl’ to television, but there’s thus far been no word as to which network may pick up ‘Krypton.’ If it’s CBS, there could be a tie-in between the two shows. If ‘Krypton’ winds up at a different network, then don’t expect there to be any connection. In the comics, Supergirl/Kara Zor-El is actually older than her cousin Superman/Kal-El, but due to being trapped in suspended animation, upon arriving on Earth, she finds herself still a teenager, while her infant cousin has grown into adulthood.
Screenwriter David S. Goyer (‘Man of Steel‘, the Dark Knight films) is attached to the project, which should focus on Superman’s birth family including father Jor-El and mother Lara, as well as possibly uncle and aunt Zor-El and Alura, and Brainiac who in recent years has been recast as an AI that helped the citizens of Krypton before going rogue and turning on its populace.
It’s not clear how long the show will run. If it’s successful, it could potentially run for years… but we all know how it’s all going to end. Even so, it may still be an interesting journey.
What do you think? Are you interested in seeing a prequel set before Superman’s birth? Do you think the exotic world of Krypton can be fairly adapted to television?
