Fans of the Marvel Universe’s friendly neighborhood web-slinger have already started out on the road to ‘Spider-Verse,’ the upcoming event that will feature pretty much every Spider-Man ever, but we’re far from the thick of it. As we heard in the hallowed halls of the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City for the final panel of this year’s New York Comic Con, there is an INSANE amount of awesomeness coming our way according to panelists Nick Lowe, Dan Slott, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Mike Costa, Humberto Ramos, Ellie Pyle, Peter David, Robbie Thompson, and Christos Gage.
After touching on the current line of Spidey books such as ‘Amazing Spider-Man’, ‘Spider-Man 2099’, and ‘Edge of Spider-Verse’, Lowe went into some details about the highly anticipated ‘Spider-Woman’ #1 from Dennis Hopeless and Greg Land. We learned that the events of the first three issues of the book are put into motion in ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #10 when Jessica Drew and newest Spider-hero Silk are sent on a mission. However, it looks like Cindy Moon’s awesomeness won’t be able to be contained in just one book because it was announced that ‘Silk’ #1 from ‘Supernatural’ writer Thompson and Stacey Lee would be coming in February 2015. (If you’re been reading my ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ reviews, then you know that I went wild for this news, as well as the new costume depicted on the cover by Dave Johnson and the variant by Lee.)
Silk isn’t the only new fan favorite Spider-Lady getting her own ongoing series in the new year. The version of Gwen Stacy that appeared in ‘Edge of Spider-Verse’ #2 will star in ‘Spider-Gwen’ #1 by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez. Coming to our local shops in February as well, the series will chronicle Gwen’s balance of her personal life and her new life as a costumed hero.
While these new characters seemed to overtake the reveals of the panel, there are some epic adventures coming for some more established Spider-heroes as well, specifically the clones. Costa touched on his work on ‘Scarlet Spiders’, which stars Ultimate Jessica Drew AKA Black Widow, the current 616 Scarlet Spider Kaine, and the original Scarlet Spider Ben Reilly. The writer couldn’t divulge much, but he did say that the trio goes on a mission that is “very clone-related”.
In what has got to be the craziest news of all, Gage talked about ‘Spider-Verse Team-Up’, a miniseries that features one story from him and another from a different guest writer each issue. The one story that he touched on finds Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales teaming up with Drake Bell’s Spider-Man from the Disney XD show ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ to rescue the Spider-Man from the 1960s cartoon. Crazy right? It is kind of a bummer that the 1990s cartoon Spider-Man isn’t getting in on this action, but you never know what the Spidey office has up their sleeves these days, so we may get one by the end of ‘Spider-Verse’.
Finally, during the brief Q&A session, Slott revealed that ‘Spider-Verse’ is connected to Jonathan Hickman’s run on ‘Avengers’ and ‘New Avengers’, which will all ultimately culminate in ‘Secret Wars’, because “the dimensions breaking down” is an important part of Morlun’s plan.
As usual, Marvel Comics really brought their A game to their hometown con and sent NYCC 2014 off into the sunset with a bang. But which bit of news were you the most excited to hear? Let us know in the comments below.
