Perhaps best known as Luke Cage and Jessica Jones‘ nanny, the mutant Avenger Squirrel Girl has risen from being something of a joke to the star of her own comic book series!

Doreen Green possesses many animal-like attributes, including an actual tail, claws and the ability to communicate with squirrels, but her most powerful trait is that she can never be defeated, no matter how mighty her opponent, thus explaining the title of her new book, ‘The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.’ In the past, Squirrel Girl has taken on, and bested Doctor Doom, Wolverine, Deadpool and even uber-villain Thanos!

The new series will be written by Ryan North with art by Erica Henderson.  You can see Henderson’s take on the character below:

Not much further information about the series has been released, but even in advance, I’m sure “quirky” will be a suitable adjective to describe it.

The book follows Doreen as she goes off to college, but in true Marvel fashion, trouble follows her and she soon has to dive back into the world of super heroics.

Squirrel Girl is an Avenger almost by technicality as she was part of the jokey Great Lakes Avengers, a team that also included Reed Rickard’s knock-off Flatman, Dina Soar, an anthropomorphic pterodactyl and Big Bertha a woman that is… fat.  I guess so fat it’s super human.  Wait, is her real name Mama June?  Ahem, I digress.

Squirrel Girl will apparently be taking on the greatest of threats in her new comic.  You can check out the two different covers below.  The first is by regular artist Erica Henderson:

There is also a variant cover by the legendary Art Adams:

Well… even Dazzler defeated Galactus once, right?

What do you think?  Does Squirrel Girl deserve her own comic series?  Will you be picking it up?  Or does it sound like a bad joke to you?
