After only being out of the box office for two years, it has been announced that the ‘Underworld’ series is getting a reboot. That’s right! The action adventure of the vampire Selena is already being rebooted for the big screen and I’m sure that I’m not alone when I say that this is far too soon to happen. With Lakeshore Entertainment having only announced this, there is no casting or crew lined up aside from Cory Goodman (‘Priest,’ ‘The Last Witch Hunter‘) attached to the project to write the script.

The first ‘Underworld’ was released in 2003 with Len Wiseman (‘Total Recall,’ ‘Live Free or Die Hard’) in the director’s chair and Kate Beckinsale (‘Whiteout’, ‘Vacancy’) in the starring role which helped cement her as a bankable name in Hollywood. The movie was followed in 2006 with ‘Underworld: Evolution,’ 2009 with the prequel ‘Underworld: Rise of the Lycans,’ and finally in 2012 with ‘Underworld: Awakening‘ which saw Beckinsale reprise her role once again. This set of action films set against the backdrop of two classic styled horror villains has been a clear hit with fans.

With the last film in the series making over $160 million worldwide and the franchise having grossed over $458.2 million it should be no surprise that they want to find a way to keep the name and concept going. I must admit, it seems a little surprising that they wouldn’t just want to make an ‘Underworld 5‘ when Beckinsale was up for it and the fourth was the highest grossing to date. Maybe they plan to go the Marvel route like everyone else and try to do not only a main series but stand alone films? Only time will tell.

I mean honestly, it just seems far too soon for a complete reboot of this series that pits vampires against werewolves.

What are your thoughts of a reboot to the ‘Underworld’ universe? Would you rather they continue on, stop it, or are you fine with a restart?
