‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ set up a mystery as to the father of Star-Lord, a.k.a. Peter Jason Quill, played by Chris Pratt.  Quill, leaving him spends a lot of the movie discussing his mother, who died when he was a child, leaving him a mix tape collection before he was whisked off into space.  But what about his father?

Director James Gunn stresses “It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much,” referring to J’Son/Jason of the Spartax.  (Peter’s middle name is Jason, which was kept for the movie.)

The director stresses that a lot of care went into establishing who Star-Lord’s father was and that this would play a large part in the already confirmed sequel. “There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill’s father is between a select two or three of us.  That’s been part of the plan since the beginning, that’s something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu’s place in everything made sense and it does, so it’s all very specific stuff.”   Yondu, played my Michael Rooker, was instrumental in raising the young, motherless Quill.  (He also set him down the outlaw path, but not everyone can be an angel.)

Expect Quill’s father to factor into the second movie, along with Thanos most likely, played by Josh Brolin who was set up first in ‘The Avengers’ then in a larger capacity in ‘Guardians’. “He will show up [in the sequel] if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not.  Thanos is not the most important thing in ‘Guardians 2’, that’s for damn sure. There’s the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos.  I think Thanos has been lonely for a long time. He can handle it. He’s used to his loneliness. He’s got some other kids out there. He’s got to look after them. Nebula’s probably the sweetest of them, which tells you what his kids are like…”

The sequel is already scheduled for release on July 28th, 2017 with most of the cast of the first movie expected to return. Are you excited to to return to Marvel’s cosmic fringes?
