With ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘ raking in $65 million at the box office domestically on its opening weekend, it should come as no surprise that a sequel was just announced. I’m sure having broke $93.7 million globally the studio thinks that they’ve got a franchise to mine for potential gold once again. While they haven’t quite broken even yet, the film was a $125 million gamble by Paramount Pictures, they do seem to be close to seeing that happen as this is only the opening weekend and not every market has shown the film yet. Honestly, with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ in its second week of release those were some pretty strong opening numbers.

Set for a June 3rd, 2016 release, the movie is tentatively titled ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2’ (though it wouldn’t surprise me with Michael Bay still on board to produce that we’ll get some kind of a subtitle for the film). ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Revenge of the Shredder’ or ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Dark Side of the Pizza’ anyone?

As I mentioned above Bay is back to produce through Platinum Dunes and screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec are also returning to pen the sequel. So if you did enjoy the first outing of the current reboot, the sequel should have the same tone to enjoy.

According to the President of Domestic Marketing and Distribution for Paramount, Megan Colligan:

“‘Guardians’ is a great movie and it’s always tough to come right behind a great movie. Ultimately we played more like a family film and they played a notch older. The great thing about summer is the marketplace is able to expand to allow for these two films.”

I’m not quite sure I felt family film vibe on the early trailers but I’ll take Colligan’s word for it!

With mixed reviews of the movie coming in, the box office numbers seem to be pushing it to be a financial success which is all that matters. As we all know, it is the box office sales that tend to end up guaranteeing a sequel.
