After a number of press screenings of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ this month, it became clear that Marvel Studios left out the film’s post-credits scene. Many thought that James Gunn may have chosen not to take part in the tradition, but the director has stated in interviews that there definitely is one. Now, we know for sure that this scene exists because it has leaked online.
Before we continue, there are some SPOILERS for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ from here on out. If you don’t wish to be spoiled, then here’s your chance to remain unscathed. Don’t say that I didn’t warn you.
First, let’s start with the mid-credits scene that has been included in press screenings. After Groot sacrifices himself to save Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, and Drax from certain death on Ronan’s ship, which happens to be falling out of the sky, he shatters into countless pieces. However, Rocket saves a splinter of Groot and the lovable houseplant/muscle begins to grow anew. Once the initial credits roll with ‘I Want You Back’ by the Jackson 5 playing over them, we see Drax cleaning his knives after battle. But while he’s not looking, baby Groot is dancing in his pot and is really busting a move. For a moment, the green gladiator looks up and Groot stops. After seeing that nothing is amiss, Drax goes back to his task and Groot resumes dancing.
Although, that’s not the bizarre cameo that I’m referring to in the title of this article. That adjective is reserved for the post-credits scene featuring Benicio Del Toro’s Collector. As Taneleer Tivan sits in the wreckage of his museum on Knowhere with a green beverage, Cosmo the Russian space dog tries to comfort his captor/master after the Infinity Gem leveled the whole place. Then, a voice from off screen says, “Why do you let him lick you like that for?” When the camera pans over, we see Howard the Duck with a drink of his own. After he exclaims, “Gross,” the duck takes a drink and we cut to a title card that says, “Howard the Duck created by Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik.”
If you want to see the scene before you catch ‘Guardians’ in theaters this weekend, you can see it below. However, if it gets taken down before you had a chance to watch it, there’s a screen grab of Howard for you as well.
What do you think about the post-credits scenes for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’? Are you disappointed that they didn’t really connect the film to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (even though there were little hints throughout the movie)? Or do you think this cameo is just plain hilarious? Sound off in the comments.
‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ starring Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper blasts off on August 1st, 2014.
