Screenwriter David Goyer, who penned the script for ‘Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice’ recently mocked the character of Martian Manhunter/J’Onn J’Onzz a longstanding member of the Justice League in various incarnations.  Goyer summarized the shape-shifting hero by saying:

“He can’t be f*****g called the *Martian* Manhunter because that’s goofy. He can be called Manhunter… The whole deal with Martian Manhunter is he’s an alien living amongst us… So he comes down to Earth and decides, unlike Superman who already exists in the world now, that he’s just going to be a homicide detective… So instead of using super-powers and mind-reading and like, oh, I could figure out if the President’s lying or whatever, he just decides to disguise himself as a human homicide detective. Dare to dream!”

This would seemingly indicate that J’Onn had no chance in hell of surfacing as part of Warner Brothers/DC’s cinematic universe.  Or does he?

It was recently “leaked” that ‘Batman V. Superman’ sets up a ‘Justice League’ movie for 2017.  The main villain in that movie is supposed to be Darkseid, which would reflect the modern New 52 comics.  Wonder Woman and Cyborg are confirmed for ‘Batman V. Superman’ and it’s heavily rumored that Aquaman, Green Lantern and The Flash could also pop up.  (And with a ‘Shazam!’ movie planned, that character could also put in an appearance.)  Could Martian Manhunter also show his green face onscreen?  Maybe.

The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider tweeted an “agency grid” reportedly for the ‘Justice League’ movie:

According to this, yes, J’Onn J’Onzz will appear as will Maxwell Lord, a formerly benevolent character, who over the years went down a dark path and betrayed the Justice League, murdering the Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) and telepathically manipulating Superman to the point where he nearly killed Wonder Woman, before the Amazon Princess snapped Lord’s neck to stop him, kicking off the ‘Infinite Crisis’ miniseries.

Will Goyer just have to get over his aversion to the Martian Manhunter?  Or will they have to bring in another writer to carry on the franchise?  Goyer has been pretty instrumental in the DC movies up to now and his dislike of the character is pretty clear.  Will Warner Brother overrule him and force him to use J’Onn J’Onzz?
