Drew Goddard, who is writing and executive producing Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ series based on the blind Marvel Comics superhero will also help bring Spider-Man’s enemies the ‘Sinister Six’ to the big screen. Goddard previously wrote and directed ‘Cabin In The Woods’ based on a script by Joss Whedon. He also contributed to the script of ‘World War Z’ and the TV series ‘Alias’.
Goddard was hired by Sony in December to pen ‘Sinister Six’ with the option open to him to direct. The villain-centric movie is just one of the movies Sony has in the pipeline in an effort to expand their ‘Spider-Man’ franchise. They are also planning a Venom movie scripted by Ed Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Ed Solomon, directed by Kurtzman. Supervising both projects are producers Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ director Marc Webb, who Sony describes as a “franchise brain to expand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films.”
The make up of the team is unknown. The original team lineup consisted of Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, Mysterio, Vulture and Kraven the Hunter. Doctor Octopus and Sandman appeared in the Sam Raimi series of ‘Spider-Man’ movies and both Doc Ock and the Vulture are teased in the upcoming ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’. Over the years, however, nearly every single one of Spider-Man’s foes has served as a member of the team, including Venom, The Shocker, Carnage, The Lizard as well as alternate versions of Mysterio and Kraven… among others.
Most likely, if I were to guess, Sandman and Kraven will be omitted from the movie, with Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin and Paul Giamatti’s Rhino replacing them, joining Jaime Foxx as Electro and two new players coming on board as Vulture and Doc Ock. Mysterio could also possibly be substituted by The Lizard, played by Rhys Ifans in the first ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ movie.
In addition to these two villain spinoff movies, Sony has already announced a third and fourth ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ movie although it’s not clear if stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will return as they were only signed to three movies each. Shailene Woodley filmed scenes as Mary Jane Watson for ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ but her scenes were cut and it isn’t clear if she will surface in a later movie, especially after her starring role in ‘Divergent’ proved to be a resounding hit. She may simply be too expensive now.
‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ is directed by Marc Webb from a script written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner and James Vanderbilt. The film stars Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May, Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Jamie Foxx as Electro, Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn and Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ sequel will swing into theaters May 2, 2014.
