After taking a brief hiatus from the genre that they revolutionized, the Wachowskis are making a comeback to science fiction with their upcoming film, ‘Jupiter Ascending’, which happened to land on my most anticipated releases of 2014. They’re also working on a sci-fi series for Netflix called ‘Sense8’. But if the latest rumors are true, it looks like they’re going back to the place that started it all.

According to Latino Review, Andy and Lana Wachowski are working on a brand new trilogy for their seminal sci-fi series ‘The Matrix’. The report says that Warner Bros. is all in for this idea and there are “early treatments and outlines already turned in to the studio”. Apparently, their intention is have the first installment ready for a theatrical release in 2017.

Previously, the siblings revisited the world of Neo, Morpheus, and Agent Smith with a collection of nine short films called ‘The Animatrix’, three video games, and a series of comic books called ‘The Matrix Comics’. But this is the first time that another live action trilogy is being talked about seriously. With WB losing the ‘Terminator’ franchise, it’s possible that they could fill that void with more from ‘The Matrix’.

It’s important to know that when reading over the report it makes sure to note that the plentiful denials are on their way. But it also points out that the same thing happened with Khan in ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’, the ‘Independence Day’ sequels, and many more. Personally, I wouldn’t take too much stock in the rumor until a more official report makes it’s way online, but for fans of ‘The Matrix’ that are clamoring for more, there may be hope yet.

What do you think about potentially seeing an all-new ‘Matrix’ trilogy from the Wachowskis? What do you think it will be about? Would you want a prequel in the same vein as ‘Star Wars’, a reboot similar to J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’, or another sequel featuring some of your favorite characters? Let’s hear your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
