Earlier this week, production started in Johannesburg, South Africa for ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’, the crown jewel of Marvel’s Phase Two from ‘The Avengers’ director Joss Whedon. Fans have recently been buzzing thanks to the announcement of Paul Bettany playing The Vision, but now the focus has shifted momentarily to his comic book counter part’s long time love interest.
About six months ago before Elizabeth Olsen landed the role of the Scarlet Witch in the next feature starring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, there was talk of changing Wanda’s signature costume. Many speculated that it would resemble the Ultimates Universe take on the character when Whedon teased that “she can’t wear a leotard”, but now the actress has a bit more insight on the witch’s Marvel Cinematic Universe fashion.
In an interview with Total Film, Olsen briefly discusses her costume in the upcoming Avengers film. While confirming that it varies from the attire that we’ve come accustomed to seeing, she also mentions inspiration from the source material:
“I don’t think Joss ever would have hired me, honestly, if he wanted me to wear those outfits; I am not a professional athlete and nor am I a model. Wearing those costumes wouldn’t be fun for anyone who wasn’t those things. He already had a different idea. It respects and involves the comic book character but it’s different, more rooted. It’s for someone today… Well, if someone walked around wearing what she wore in the comics, people would stop and say, ‘What the hell… she thinks she’s a superhero!’”
While Olsen also mentions that a cloak was created specifically to hide her costume while she travels from set to set, the paparazzi have a sneaky way of getting the shot they need, so there’s a small chance that we could be seeing a glimpse of Wanda’s wardrobe sooner rather than later. I don’t know about you, but I’m most curious to see if her outfit includes that red headband that Joss hinted at last year when talking of the magical mage’s gear.
