After completing ‘Cloud Atlas’, the Wachowskis decided to return to the world of science fiction by bringing ‘Jupiter Ascending’ to life. But in addition to returning to the genre that they revolutionized on the big screen, they also have another sci-fi project in the works for Netflix. Nearly a year ago, the siblings received the green light to deliver 10 episodes of ‘Sense8’, a multicultural sci-fi drama following 8 individuals from around the world who have suddenly developed a telepathic link between them. A few months ago, we learned of the legendary J. Michael Straczynski’s involvement in the show as the showrunner, but now we have even more details about the plot and the characters.
TV Line broke the news this week that the series set to debut on the streaming service in the fall “will focus on eight people scattered around the globe who are connected by a shared — violent — vision. Each episode — shot in the UK, Seoul, Mumbai, Nairobi, Berlin, Mexico City, San Francisco and Chicago — will follow the characters’ separate stories, even as one entity tries to bring the octet together and another tries to kill them.”
The ensemble cast, which has not been locked down just yet, is set to include “a closeted Mexican telenovela hunk, an Icelandic party girl, a German safe-cracker, a Korean businesswoman, an African bus driver and a transgender American blogger. Perhaps most intriguing, though, are Jonas, an apparently magical African-American who appears to all of the ‘visionaries’, and his evil counterpart, Mr. Whispers.”
Though these scarce details shroud the series in an air of mystery, the production phase is scheduled to begin in June, so chances are that we’ll be learning more about this new show sooner rather than later.
Until then, what do you think about ‘Sense8’ so far? Are you excited for Lana and Andy Wachowski to team with ‘Babylon 5’ creator J. Michael Straczynski? Do you have any picks for potential cast members? Sound off in the comments below.
