After a long search through Hollywood’s hottest young actors a while back, James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ finally brought on Chris Pratt of ‘Parks and Recreation’ as Peter Quill, the leader of the ragtag team that goes by the name of Star-Lord. It was an extremely surprising pick to the audience of Marvel’s upcoming 2014 cosmic feature, but from what little leaked footage that we’ve seen so far, Andy Dwyer seems to be holding his own in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But what made the actor make the jump from Pawnee City Hall employee to leader of his own superhero team? Pratt recently opened up about just that.

In an interview with Fandango about his Phase Two feature film, the ‘Moneyball’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ star revealed that he didn’t even need to look at a script before agreeing to join this project. When aked what appealed to him about his character in the movie, he said that the sheer fact that Marvel came a calling was enough for him:

“Just the fact that he was part of the Marvel brand was really exciting. I was signed up to do the movie before I was even allowed to read a script, so it wasn’t like something about this particular character got me to do it. The fact that it was a Marvel movie is what got me to do it.”

Naturally, since principal photography has already wrapped, it’s clear that he has read the script now. So, what does he think about Star-Lord? Here’s what he had to say:

“Once I did read it there were so many things about the character that I love, and one thing is that he’s very much a kid at heart. He’s like a man-child, and I like the idea that he’s got a false sense of bravado. Deep down inside he’s lonely and desperate, but on the outside he walks around like he’s big and tough, and I don’t think he does a great job of convincing everybody that he’s not just a scared little child.”

Based on Pratt’s description, Peter Quill doesn’t really sound like any other Marvel hero on the movie roster at this moment, so it’ll be refreshing to see something different than a sequel or a reboot in the superhero movie genre next year.
