Set to premier on March 21, 2014 is the live-action film adaptation of Veronica Roth’s best-selling YA novel ‘Divergent’.  Set in a dystopian future version of Chicago, the tale follows Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior (played by Shailene Woodley) as she breaks away from her family’s sect Abnegation (the selfless) and decides to become Dauntless (the brave).  Unfortunately, Tris soon discovers that she is secretly ‘Divergent’ and this puts her very life in jeopardy.

A short teaser trailer premiered in August, but with the movie growing closer and closer, Summit Entertainment has released a longer clip which fleshes the back story out a bit further.  In addition to Abnegation and Dauntless, society is also divided up into Candor (the honest), Erudite (the intelligent) and Amity (the peaceful).  In this world, teens must decide whether to remain in the faction in which they were born or to choose a different path… but if they do, they lose contact with their families for ever.

As you can see, Tris’ Divergent nature makes her a target.  But she finds support in the arms of Four (Theo James) who is also Divergent and as is stated in the clip, wants to be all things, not just one.

The film also stars Kate Winslet, Tony Goldwyn, Ashley Judd, Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz and Maggie Q.  It is directed by Neil Burger.

As a bonus, here is an interview that author Roth did with the Wall Street Journal to promote the latest (and last) book in her trilogy ‘Allegiant’.  During the interview, she discusses the ways in which relates to her main character, Tris as well as her writing process.  It’s pretty interesting!  Check it out:

Are you a fan of these books?  Are you looking forward to them being translated to the big screen?
