Just as Summit promised, the first trailer for ‘Divergent’ premiered on MTV during their Video Music Awards pre-show. If you missed it, don’t fret! We have it here for you to see!

The teaser for the trailer, released several days ago, promised a lot of action and while it was still uncertain how close to the novel by Veronica Roth the movie will be, this trailer seems to answer that question and more!

‘Divergent’ is the newest candidate that aspires to become the next YA novel to movie franchise hoping to fill the hole left when ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘The Twilight Saga’ ended their runs. It’s set in dystopian Chicago where society is broken up into five distinct factions based on their personality. When a child reaches a certain age, they must take an aptitude test of sorts to determine which faction they are most suited for. Unfortunately for our heroine Tris (played by Shailene Woodley), her tests show that she can fit into more than one faction, thus making her a Divergent – which is not a good thing to be as someone is ordering the destruction of all Divergents. Tris sets out to find out why being a Divergent is so dangerous before it is too late.

The trailer gives a better look at Theo James who plays Four, a member of the Dauntless faction who trains Tris and helps her from being killed. From the looks of the trailer, he may also prove to be a love interest for the character. The end scene in the video below is one fans of the book may remember and should bring back memories of that passage from the novel.

If you haven’t read the book, you have plenty of time to read it (and the rest of the trilogy) as the film won’t be released until next year. After ‘Divergent’, Tris’ tale continues in the novel titled ‘Insurgent’ and will conclude in the upcoming October release of ‘Allegiant’, which will be told from the perspective of both Tris and Four. Whether Summit will also plan a trilogy (or rather a tetralogy if the trend of cutting the last book of a trilogy into two films continues) is yet to be seen but it does look like fans will at least have a sequel as ‘Insurgent‘ has been greenlit.

‘Divergent’ will be in theaters March 21, 2014.
