Very few actresses are a bigger staple in sci-fi movies than Sigourney Weaver. Aside from being known for her roles in the ‘Aliens’ and ‘Avatar’ franchises, she’s appeared in ‘Ghostbusters II’, ‘Galaxy Quest’, and ‘Wall-E’. The former Ellen Ripley has even lent her voice to an episode of ‘Futurama’. And now, it looks like she’s adding another science fiction story to her IMDB page.

The actress is joining the cast of ‘District 9’ and ‘Elysium’ director Neill Blomkamp’s next feature called ‘Chappie’. As previously reported, the story follows “a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes.” There are no specifics regarding Weaver’s character just yet, but since the story follows a sort of dysfunctional family dynamic, it’s possible that she could be stepping into the matriarchal role of this group.

The big screen veteran will join Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, rap-rave duo Die Antwoord members Ninja and Yolandi Visser, and Sharlto Copely, a regular of Blomkamp’s who will voice the titular robot.

Currently, production is underway on this project and it’s set to be released by Sony Pictures on March 27, 2015. And while it’s great news that ‘Chappie’ is well on it’s way to theaters, that means that ‘District 10’, the follow up to the director’s debut film ‘District 9’, will have to wait just a little longer.
