Based on Veronica Roth’s best-selling YA novel series, ‘Divergent’ hits theaters next spring and Summit has released two new posters featuring Shailene Woodley and Theo James for the film.

In a dystopian future version of Chicago, society has been broken up into five factions: Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave) and Erudite (the intelligent).  Teenagers are free to choose whichever faction the feel they belong in, but if they select a faction other than the one they were raised in, they lose contact with their parents forever.  Beatrice Prior was raised in Abnegation, but decides to commit herself to the Dauntless, not realizing her older brother was also planning to leave their faction, going to the Erudite.  What not even Beatrice– who reinvents herself as “Tris”– realizes is that she is Divergent, meaning she exhibits traits that could align her with multiple factions… and that makes her dangerous… and puts her life in danger.

Shailene Woodley  stars as Tris in the futuristic film.  Theo James  stars as Tobias Eaton, better known as “Four,” Tris’ mentor and love interest.

These two new posters are clearly symbolic, and on Four’s back, you can see the individual symbols for each faction.

‘Divergent’ has proven to be a quite successful book series, garnering comparisons to ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise.  (Both are set in dystopian futures and showcase strong female protagonists.)  The second book was entitled ‘Insurgent’ and the third and final book, ‘Allegiant,’ is slated to come out in just a few weeks, on October 22nd.

Are you a fan of the books?  Are you looking forward to the movies?  Will these be closer in success to ‘The Hunger Games’ or will they fall flat like ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones?’  Is there room for another YA franchise in theaters?

‘Divergent’ hits theaters on March 21st, 2014.  It’s directed by Neil Burger (‘Limitless’) and also stars Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, Tony Goldwyn, Mekhi Phifer, Maggie Q, Zoe Kravitz and Miles Teller.
