With ‘Dexter’ leaving a hole in our hearts as it departs the air (aside from rumors of a spin off series), Showtime needed to bring us something new that falls into the horror genre. ‘Penny Dreadful’ is that show and this 16-second teaser doesn’t say exactly what we’re going to see but it gives us a few glimpses of some of the cast’s lineup.

In the series we’re going to see a “psychosexual horror series [that] features some of literature’s most frightening and iconic figures as they grapple with alienation in Victorian London.” That means we are going to see a lot of the monster icons such as Doctor Victor Frankenstein and his Monster, Dorian Grey, Dracula, and that really looked like a werewolf in the teaser as well. With Fox bringing about ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen‘ (and Alan Moore saying it’s a horrible idea), it’s only fair that we have some competition in the classic horror monsters team up. With it being on Showtime? I can tell you which of these shows has my money and it’s the one whose creator isn’t calling the concept unoriginal.

This one is a tough call. I love all the shows that have come out on Showtime so far, but when Fox does good Sci-fi, like ‘Fringe’ and ‘Firefly’ for example, they were both amazing. Of course just because there are two shows with the same concept doesn’t mean one has to be good and the other bad. We could luck out and both of these are smash hits with completely different premises outside of the team up angle.

The cast’s lineup is going to include Billie Piper (‘Doctor Who’), Josh Hartnett (’30 Days Of Night’), Eva Green (‘Sin City: A Dame to Kill For’), Timothy Dalton (‘Doctor Who’), Rory Kinnear (‘Skyfall’), Harry Treadaway (‘Cockneys vs Zombies’), Reeve Carney and Helen McCrory (‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’).

The series will begin filming this coming October and be set to air at some point in 2014. Don’t be surprised if you see it taking ‘Dexter’s vacant time spot.

Are you looking forward to ‘Penny Dreadful’? Are you more psyched for this one or ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’?

Penny Dreadful centers around some of literature’s famed monsters — including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and figures from the Dracula – weaving together classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation.
