Well it looks as if Andres Muschietti, the director of ‘Mama,’ is in talks to take up working on Universal’s ‘The Mummy.’ We’ve known for over a year now that Universal wants to reboot ‘The Mummy’ as it was a cash cow for the studio. With the continued success of zombie films such as ‘World War Z‘ (at least with audiences if not our reviewer) it seems like now is the perfect time to bring back this franchise.

Things were going well with the project up until about a month ago when Len Wiseman stepped away as director. While his work on the upcoming ‘Sleepy Hollow‘ looked good, it did open a void that would need to be filled for this movie to go forward.

While we don’t know a lot on the film, Wiseman was previously quoted with saying:

“One of the things that interested me with this mummy is, he’s still in essence a man. They haven’t turned his brain into a monster brain. He still has a personality and is very cunning and calculating. He’s a true character in any form, and in creature form, even if he is that staggering creature, it becomes more important that he’s a thinking, calculating person.”

and

“It’s horror. Its epic. It’s more of a modern day version of what would happen if we came across a mummy in our world today. It is pretty fascinating.”

So it does sound like the studio is going the horror route which is why Andres is the perfect fit to fill the void in this film. While he is a new director, he has proven he can do horror. Horror, suspense, and everything else we’ll need to see ‘The Mummy’ return to the horror roots it had been intended for.

Are you looking forward to a reboot of ‘The Mummy’ in horror form? Is it too soon to restart the series even though the newer version will have no real ties to the last one? Let us know below!
