I was a huge fan of the first 2 seasons of ‘American Horror Story’ and am happy that we have two new images that showcase both Kathy Bates (‘Misery’) and Angela Bassett (‘Strange Days’) in their roles for the third of the series. While the two pictures don’t portray it, the new information we have shows that they will play bitter rivals.

Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have done an absolutely amazing job at keeping each season of the series original and intriguing, so I’m curious as to how they will deal introducing witchcraft into the mix. As it will be splashed in with their usual dramatic tales of revenge, I’m sure it will end up working out perfectly.

We also finally have found out quite a bit more about the show itself which you can read after the two pictures:

We follow Fiona (Jessica Lange) as one of the most powerful witches in the world, though lately she’s been using her powers to keep up her health and looks as the years go by. When a young witch is killed in her home town of New Orleans, she returns home out of curiosity and in order to make up with her estranged daughter, Cordelia (Sarah Paulson). Her daughter runs a school for witches who she is not only trying to teach, but trying to protect as well. Her coven of witches are at war with an ancient coven of voodoo witches who were the first to dwell in New Orleans. The two must make peace with one another while dealing with multiple adversaries who are trying to destroy the world that they have built.

The show will switch between a view of the 1970’s and the 1830s. In the past we’ll be introduced to two historical figures, Madame Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) who was known for torturing slaves and the voodoo queen of the time, Marie Laveau (Angela Basssett.)

This will be a tale told throughout the ages just as in the previous seasons of ‘American Horror Story’ where actions in the past directly effect the ‘present’ that we are witnessing. Also like the previous seasons, it will be a self-contained story of 13 episodes that will most likely end up leaving us wanting more.

‘American Horror Story: Coven’ starring Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts, Denis O’Hare, Alexandra Breckenridge, Patti LuPone, Gabourey Sidibe, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy, and Lily Rabe premieres on October 9, 2013 at 10:00pm on FX.
