Like most of the primary cast members of the ‘X-Men’ movie franchise, Halle Berry is back in black, reprising her role as the X-Men’s leader Storm (Ororo Munroe) for ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’.  With Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier and James Marsden’s Cyclops both deceased, following the events of ‘X-Men: The Last Stand,” one might naturally assume that Storm would take center stage, leading the mutant rebellion against their Sentinel oppressors.

Do you know what happens when an Academy Award winner gets pregnant? The same thing that happens to everyone else.

Well, that might have been the plan, but even though Storm can command the forces of nature, Halle Berry can’t fight human nature, or in other words, her surprise pregnancy.  The Oscar winner admits, “My ever-growing belly was posing a constant challenge! What I could do was getting more limited so the role that I play is so different from what it could have been, due to my surprise pregnancy. I wasn’t in as much as I was meant to be.”

I guess Storm doesn’t have the luxury of hiding in bulky sweaters or behind shopping bags or under tables the way so many sitcom actresses have in the past.  Then again, there are more mutants in this movie than in three Avengers movies, so I’m sure some of her castmates were more than willing to step in and say a few extra lines here and there or maybe get an extra action sequence.  Let’s just be glad that Halle is thinking of her and her baby’s health and well-being first!

As for what to expect from Ororo Munroe in this installment, Berry revealed a tantalizing tease:

“There’s something very revealing and shocking about Storm in this movie that I thought was needed. There are some things you find out about her that I think give you much more insight into who she is.”

Hmmm… what could that be?  Considering how many characters have been in these films (and how much emphasis has been put on Hugh Jackman’s ‘Wolverine‘), not much attention has been revealed about most of the mutants’ backstories.

In the comics, Ororo lived on the streets of Cairo, trained to be an expert pickpocket, lockpick and thief.  She unwittingly tries to lift a younger Professor Xavier’s wallet, but his mental telepathy foils her plan.  Though he doesn’t formally train her, she is the first mutant he attempts to help.  Later on, her shadier skills have helped her and her fellow X-Men out on several occasions.  Will her dark past come to light?  Will we see a more aggressive and street-smart Storm this time?  Or is there something else, perhaps even a new development never before revealed in the comics?

Are you disappointed that Storm’s role had to be edited down?  I will admit that hers were some of the most visual super powers of all the mutants, so it will be a little sad to see less of her lightning flinging and swooping along on cyclone winds.  On the other hand, her hair always looks strange and her accent comes and goes from scene to scene.  Of the entire cast, she was the one that I always felt was probably the oddest fit.  But what do you think?  Leave a comment below!
