James Gunn has certainly lined up an impressive cast for his upcoming Marvel movie ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. Last weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, he brought a number of them to Hall H to unveil the first look at the film, which is currently shooting across the pond in London. While Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio Del Toro, and Michael Rooker were all on hand at the con to present the footage and confirm their roles in the movie, a huge name was missing from the festivities, but was later made official in a press release.
Variety reports that veteran actress Glenn Close has joined the cast of the Phase Two film. Known for her versatility in film, television, and theater, Close is a six-time Academy Award nominee and a Tony, Obie, Emmy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award winner. Starring in films such as ‘Fatal Attraction’, ‘Mars Attacks!’, ‘101 Dalmatians’, and more, the actress has been a staple in the entertainment business since the mid-70s.
Close is lined up to play Nova Prime, the highest-ranking member of the Nova Corps, a space militia and exploration division tasked with the protection of the entire Andromeda Galaxy and Earth. She isn’t playing a specific Nova Prime from the comics, as I’m fairly certain that there wasn’t a female character to take the position. However, who’s really going to put up a fuss about it? Glenn Close is great and Gunn is exploring unfamiliar territory for nearly 90% of the Marvel fan base, even including the ones who are up on their comic history. All that matters is that she can be tough and commanding, which she’s definitely proven in the past that she can handle.
I for one am extremely excited to see her step into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. James Gunn definitely has a unique take on the Guardians, so I look forward to seeing his final product.
