Back in 2011 we covered that Tom Cruise was going to star in a ‘Groundhog Day’ themed science fiction military movie for Warner Brothers and Village Roadshow Pictures entitled ‘We Are Mortals‘. It’s the story of a soldier who relives the last day of his life over and over again until he can set things right. At some point, the film’s title was for some reason changed to ‘All You Need Is Kill‘ and life moved on.
Here we are a year later and this action film that also stars Emily Blunt as his main co-star now has another name. This time around we’ve learned that the movie is now known as ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ and I, for one, think it’s the best name of all three to date! Of course, by the time the movie is released on June 6th of 2014 we’ll have to see what it’s being called.
While there is no footage yet, the stills look good and we’re only a few days away from seeing the first clips from the film. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, it’s all being let out at this year’s Comic-Con on Saturday July 20th. Sue Kroll (President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures) was all about the Comic-Con audience seeing it first stating:
“We are extremely pleased to be able to give the Comic-Con audience, who’ve always been so supportive of us, the first peek at footage from ‘Edge of Tomorrow.’ The movie has all of us at the Studio very excited, and we can’t wait to see the reactions of fans who know and love the sci-fi genre so well.”
I agree Sue, I’m excited too! As crazy as Tom Cruise is he can always pull off an amazingly well done action and/or science fiction film. When you mix both together? I’ll fully admit, I’ll most likely be in the audience on opening weekend.
With a cast that is also rounded off with Bill Paxton (‘Aliens’, ‘Independence Day’), Charlotte Riley (‘World Without End’), Jonas Armstrong (BBC TV’s “Robin Hood”), and Franz Drameh (‘Attack the Block’), I am excited for the initial trailer’s release! I have a feeling it’s going to keep me eagerly awaiting it’s June release next year.
If you don’t yet know what ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ is about, here’s the synopsis:
The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances.
Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over.
But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who has laid waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.
‘Edge of Tomorrow’ is slated to be released on June 6, 2014.
