At this point, it seems like the only one still holding on to ‘Ghostbusters 3’ is Dan Aykroyd. The film has been put on hold again and again and again, and it finally got to the point where it appeared as if the veteran funny man was ready to step off and throw in the towel. However, in a new interview with Larry King, the actor was still showing signs of determination for this long-gestating project.

Aykroyd remained hopeful for production on the sequel to start up next year and spoke to the legendary talk show host about what the plot of the new movie entailed:

“It’s based on new research that’s being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University. […] Basically, there’s research being done that I can say that the world or the dimension that we live in, our four planes of existence, length, height, width and time, become threatened by some of the research that’s being done. Ghostbusters — new Ghostbusters — have to come and solve the problem.”

Going along with previous reports of the details of the film, Aykroyd reiterated that characters from the original films would be appearing alongside these new Ghostbusters from Columbia University, including himself and King “in [his] new format as [he] comments on what’s happening in Manhattan up there at Morningside Heights”. Unfortunately, one familiar face that still isn’t on board is Bill Murray, but his long-time friend and co-star says there’s “a hole for him” if he changes his mind. Aykroyd says, “If Billy wants to walk in the door and be in the movie, we will find a place.”

As much as I’d like to see ‘Ghostbusters 3’ come to fruition, I’m in the “I’ll believe it when I see it” camp at this point. It’s great that the former Dr. Raymond Stantz is staying optimistic about the project, but there are just so many obstacles in the way right now.

What do you think about the fate of ‘Ghostbusters 3’? Do you think that these plot lines will eventually get to play out on the silver screen one day? Even if they don’t, what do you think about this proposed story? Let us know what you’re thinking in the usual spot.
