As we inch closer to Man of Steel‘s June 14th release, DC and Warner Brothers are releasing more and more promotional material in anticipation, hopefully in order to drum up excitement for this high-stakes film, which holds in it’s hands the future of possible movies starring additional DC super heroes.  Latest are two photos of Henry Cavill in the titular role.

Well Cavill certainly has the look, with his dark hair and intense steely blue eyes.  This is our first really in-depth look at the suit.  (Please comment with your feedback below!)  The texture is very similar to that used on Brandon Routh’s suit in Superman Returns, but even more pronounced.  I don’t love that it’s the same pattern over everything, including the S shield and the boots.  Cavill certainly seems like the beefiest Man of Steel we’ve seen so far.  But is that really muscle?  Or is this a harder suit of armor, along the lines of those worn by Batman in the movies.

As many have complained, the colors are significantly darker than any prior version of Superman.  I can’t quite tell, but it doesn’t even look like the background of his S shield is even yellow.  The red nicely helps balance the intense dark blue, but the big problem area is around the waist.  I’m not going to lie, I miss the yellow belt and red trunks.  I understand modern viewers finding the shorts odd, but I’d have appreciated at the very least, a yellow and red belt.  The extra lines that are around that area are… fine.  I get that they wanted to jazz up what is typically a plain bodysuit.  It doesn’t bug me nor does it excite me.  But minus the belt or shorts, doesn’t that technically make this a onsie?  How intimidating is that?

I expect we’ll see even more promotional photos and video clips as we grow closer to the June 14th release, especially after Iron Man 3 hits this week.  In addition to Cavill, the film features Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Russell Crowe (Jor-El), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), Antje Traue (Faora), Ayelet Zurer (Lara Lor-Van), Richard Schiff (Dr. Emil Hamilton) and Rebecca Buller (Jenny Lane).

Please comment below with your opinions about the suit!  Like it?  Love it?  And which is mightier, the Man of Steel or the Man of Iron?
