Around six months ago, Matthew Vaughn dropped out of serving as the director of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’. For a while, there was a lot of speculation that he dropped out to work on the new ‘Star Wars’ movie, which now rests in the very capable hands of J.J. Abrams, but things became clear when Mark Millar stepped in to clear things up. The comic book writer/Marvel consultant to Fox revealed that Vaughn would be teaming up with him for another comic book adaptation. He said that the team would be working on a feature film version of the comic book that they co-created with ‘Watchmen’ artist Dave Gibbons called ‘The Secret Service’ for 20th Century Fox. Described as “James Bond meets ‘My Fair Lady’”, the six-part Icon Comics series follows a street-wise young man from London who gets enrolled into a spy school by his uncle.

Previously, Millar revealed that one actor who would be appearing in the film would be ‘Star Wars’ star Mark Hamill in a cameo capacity, just like he did in the comic, but now it appears that casting for the main roles has just begun. While the Hollywood Reporter said that things fell through with ‘Kick-Ass’ lead Aaron Johnson to play the London lad, their latest report says that Oscar winner Colin Firth is currently in talks to play the uncle, marking the versatile actor’s first foray into comic book movies.

Known for his award-winning performance in ‘The King’s Speech’ and other films such as ‘Love Actually’, ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’, and ‘A Single Man’, Firth has had some experience in the spy game before. Though this film would certainly be considered more action-packed than his current filmography, the actor played a British intelligence agent in ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ back in 2011, so jumping into a role as a secret agent shouldn’t be too far out of his wheelhouse.

How do you think Colin Firth will fare as Uncle Jack in ‘The Secret Service’ for Matthew Vaughn and Mark Millar? Do you think he’ll adapt well to the action despite his penchant for romantic comedies and period pieces? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

‘The Secret Service’ is scheduled to hit theaters on November 14, 2014.
