Video game films have been all the rage lately, with some of the biggest names in Hollywood stepping into the role of our favorite characters, but one format that remains largely untouched is the animated film. The power of animation is perfect for bringing our favorite franchises to the big screen, and it seems that Insomniac understands that. Their long-running Sony-exclusive series Ratchet and Clank is set to make a theatrical debut in an upcoming animated film.

The official press release reads:

Ratchet and Clank tells the story of two unlikely heroes as they struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind – a foolhardy ‘lombax’ who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way they’ll learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity.

It’s a story familiar to anyone who has played the series, and fans will be happy to know that the script was penned by none other than Insomniac Senior Writer TJ Fixman, with the full voice cast signed on to once again reprise their roles. Rainmaker Entertainment, the studio behind the recent feature film Escape From Planet Earth, will be working in co-operation with animation studio Blockade Entertainment, and the film is already in the primary production phase.

Ratchet and Clank was first released back in 2002 for PlayStation 2, and the series continues to be a hit. While the film won’t be in theaters until 2015, you can get your first glimpse in the teaser trailer below:
