About a month ago, we received the second trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film ‘After Earth’ starring Will and Jaden Smith. Now, it appears that Sony is kicking their promotion up to the next level as the first television spot has just been released.

The director of ‘The Last Airbender’ and ‘The Sixth Sense’ is diving deeper into the science fiction genre than ever before with his latest film. Set years after the Earth has been evacuated of human occupants, a father and son are left stranded on the uncharted planet surrounded by feral creatures that don’t take too kindly to their human visitors.

Whereas the films trailers focus more on the characters of the film, this first spot gives more of an overall feel of the movie. It also has some new footage that we haven’t seen before in it. You can check out the new spot below, followed by the film’s official synopsis:

A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.

While this film looks great from the trailers and this TV spot, I’m treading lightly. M. Night has fooled me before with films like ‘The Happening’ and ‘Lady In The Water’, so it’s very possible that this new film is a let down as well, but let’s not judge it so quickly. Will Smith doesn’t get involved in crap these days, so there has to be something good about it for him and his son to sign on to star. I’m not completely writing it off yet, but I’m proceeding with caution.

‘After Earth’ starring Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo, and Isabelle Fuhrman touches down on June 7, 2013.
