The film savvy son of the legendary musician, Frank Zappa, is looking to assemble the most ferocious monsters in all of cinema in one movie. Writer, producer, and actor Ahmet Zappa and his company, Monsterfoot Productions, will be teaming with Benderspink’s Chris Bender, J.S. Spink, and Jake Weiner to present ‘Monster X’, a sort of ‘Avengers’-esque team up film featuring classic monsters such as Dracula, Mr. Hyde, and Frankenstein’s monster. With the initial script written by Zappa, ‘Monster X’ will feature these creatures coming together in order to “defend humanity against an even greater threat” than themselves. All together there will be 10 members of the team, hence the X in the title.
Ahmet ZappaIn addition to producing Disney’s ‘The Odd Life Of Timothy Green’, Zappa’s company has a couple of other monster projects in the works as well. He’s attached to ‘Monster Witness Relocation Program’ and ‘The Monstrous Memoirs Of A Mighty McFearless’, both of which are in development at Disney, so it’s safe to say that the writer has a thing for monsters.
It’s interesting that they connect ‘Monster X’ to ‘The Avengers’ because it sounds more like ‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ to me. Some of the most well-known characters with a loose connection coming together to fight an unbeatable foe? It’s just swapping out literary figures for monsters. Although, I could see why they would rather be associated with the more successful movie, and few are more successful than Joss Whedon’s epic Marvel film.
Judging by his body of work, I can see Zappa putting on the kid glasses for ‘Monster X’ instead of a gritty live action film like the recent re-imagining of ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’ or ‘Snow White & The Huntsman’. I’m guessing that we’ll see the likes of the Wolfman, the Phantom of the Opera, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the rest coming together in the style of ‘Rise of the Guardians’ instead. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends up being a 3D CG film. Actually, I think that would be pretty cool.
No concrete details are available right now as Zappa plans to further develop the script before taking it to buyers, which explains all my speculation. Until we find out more about ‘Monster X’, what do you think of the idea? Besides the six monsters I named, who else do you think will join the ranks of the team?
