The new international trailer for Joseph Kosinski’s ‘Oblivion’ sheds more light on what the movie is about as well as raise more questions.
Tom Cruise stars in this sci-fi action thriller as Jack Harper (not to be confused with another role of his, Jack Reacher, or another sci-fi character fave, Jack Harkness), who repairs security drones that traverse a ravaged Earth 60 years after an alien invasion looking for remnants of alien tech to destroy. All seems to be routine until one day, a spaceship crashes and he defies orders by rescuing the oddly familiar stranger inside and ignites a chain of events that unravel all he believes and knows.
The trailer begins with the topic of memories which will play an important part of the film as well as a voice over from Cruise which gives the basic overview of the setting of the film. Already the trailer grabs your attention and sets the tone. We also finally see why the mysterious female in the crashed spaceship is so important to Jack as Morgan Freeman plays a very Morpheus-like character challenging him that what he thinks he knows about the invasion is all a lie, hence the “question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands” quote from the synopsis.
‘Oblivion’ joins the ranks of ‘Pacific Rim’, ‘Elysium’ and ‘After Earth’ as one of those unique films that’s not based on a sequel, a superhero or a book, but is an original screenplay. The film was written by Michael Ardnt, who has been tasked to write the script for ‘Star Wars VII’. The story looks fascinating and Kosinsky’s vision of that script is impressive with the visual effects and action sequences, but will it be able to bring in movie goers to the box office? From what we’ve seen so far, it just may.
Here’s hoping that the film lives up to the trailers.
