Information about Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi film, ‘Elysium,’ has been slow to come by and with the film not being released until next summer, it looks like fans may have to wait a little while longer before we get to see any real footage of the film. But, luckily, the first look of Sharlto Copley’s role has been released online and we have it here for you!

Copley has reteamed with ‘District 9’ director Blomkamp but instead of playing a hero, he’ll be playing a villain named Kruger whose job is to hunt down Matt Damon’s character who is trying to gain access to an elite community that exists beyond the Earth’s surface.

It’s a story of the have and have-nots in this futuristic action-filled film as can be seen in this updated synopsis for ‘Elysium:’

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Early reviews for the unfinished footage shown at Comic –Con last July were promising and many are looking forward to Blomkamp’s return behind the camera since helming ‘Distict 9’ three years ago. His successful blend of social commentary within an action packed sci-fi movie has made him a director to keep an eye on. From what little has been seen of ‘Elysium,’ looks like this film could be another success for the director.

In a previous interview, Copley had compared his character to The Joker, but in his recent conversation with Empire, he explains that the reference wasn’t exactly accurate:

“The Joker was a mistaken reference. I was really just saying that that was the last time I saw a villain that inspired me: somebody that set the bar. There’s no connection or likeness to The Joker in terms of the character. What I did with him — which I try to do with all my original characters — was draw from real life. I combined references from a very infamous South African military battalion called 32 Battalion, that fought in the Border Wars in South Africa, and a stereotype of character that you get in the south of Johannesburg, where the guys are a little bit more comfortable with violence!”

‘Elysium’ stars Matt Damon, Jodi Foster, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga and Diego Luna and will open in theaters on August 9, 2013.
